Make your way to Buffalo State College for the 10th Annual Runway fashion show on Saturday night. Rise recently met with the team behind the show to hear the inside scoop on what to expect. On the day we met, participants had just returned from jury. What is jury? I asked the same question myself! Jury is a panel composed of different fashion connoisseurs in Buffalo and one from NYC. This group of five is the decides whether or not students may show their collection and also the determines the winner of the scholarships awarded at the show. This year there are several scholarship options including a first, second, and third place for senior collections. Another scholarship for best in show, and the return of the Fiber Arts Award in honor of Elaine Polvinen, a Buffalo State professor that passed away. Though it sounds intimidating, this, I am told, is very common in the fashion world, with the exception of the scholarship which is awarded to the best collection of the show.

What is so cool about this show, in our very own city, is that it involves much more than the Buffalo State Fashion and Textile Technology department, though they are critical to making it run smoothly. Its founding director, Erin Habes, includes local designers and boutiques accessories within the show. In addition, many of the panel members work here and the show is sponsored by a crew of locally-minded businesses in Buffalo.

If you aren’t sold already, the theme of this show is “Remember/Imagine” to combine the best of old shows with some new designs and predicting future fashion trends. So grab your tickets, and get ready to see some cool throwbacks and future designers you will definitely want to keep your eye on.
